OUR EV FUTURE

Did you know that Electric Vehicles (EVs) will make up the bulk of our vehicle population in the coming years?

The Singapore Green Plan 2030 pushes for the adoption of EVs to ensure that all vehicles are powered by cleaner energy by 2040. The deployment of EV chargers, therefore, are key to our efforts to build up the EV ecosystem. As of August 2023, EV charging points have been installed in around 300 HDB car parks – and our goal is to do so for one-third of our car parks by the end of this year!

Hear from our own engineer Javier Lam, from the Construction Productivity and Mechanical & Electrical Department, what his role is in bringing more EV chargers to HDB towns.

Javier’s team looks into how each HDB car park can be adapted to suit EV charging needs. As EV charging takes up a lot of power, Javier and his colleagues need to determine a car park’s electrical capacity and ensure that it is sufficient. They also work closely with agencies like EMA and LTA to upgrade existing HDB car parks for this purpose, while improving new HDB car parks to be EV-ready. Our final goal is for all HDB car parks to be EV-ready by 2025!

In addition to collaborating with fellow government agencies, Javier’s team also works closely with EV charging operators to test and check that new charging points meet our safety guidelines and various requirements. The team also frequently inspects electrical equipment and accessories at the switch rooms, as well as during the installation of EV points.

The team believes that equipping our towns to be EV-ready is key to ensuring a sustainable future. There will be interesting challenges ahead, so it is important to be adaptable and innovative in our development of EV charging infrastructure at HDB car parks.
