HDB Community Day 2023 celebrates the e orts of residents in enlivening spaces and bringing people together. Come look at those
who have built tight-knit communities and enriched the heartland living experience!
Themed ‘Celebrating Life in the Heartlands’, the award ceremony was held at Gardens by the Bay on 30 June 2023 to celebrate and
recognise the efforts of various volunteers and recipients from all walks of life. These inspiring individuals play a role in promoting
gracious HDB living and nurturing a strong community spirit.
The Lively Places Challenge enables residents to propose and implement community-centric projects that solve issues and enhance HDB living. Not only does this serve as an opportunity for participants to be involved in collaborative design, it also provides them with design thinking and public engagement training to actualise these ideas.
Together with his students from Westwood Primary School, art teacher Mr Dexter Sim initiated Project Togetherness to foster collaboration and strengthen bonds among Jurong West residents. Through a series of curated workshops, participants were taught to unleash their creativity using both traditional and contemporary art techniques. These art pieces that embody the spirit of unity will be displayed at the Residents’ Network Centre.

The inaugural Singapore’s Friendly Neighbourhood Award was launched in collaboration with the Singapore Kindness Movement to recognise the efforts of neighbours who have gone the extra mile to connect with and care for fellow residents in HDB communities. Through their collective efforts, these neighbours help to build a harmonious living environment and make living in the heartland more pleasant for all.
Villa Verde is a multi-generational community led by Street Ambassadors who keep the community abuzz by organising street parties, home-hosted events and hiking tours. New residents are warmly welcomed through chat groups where they can connect with their fellow neighbours. The group also takes pride in leading interest groups over shared hobbies such as cooking.

HDB’s volunteering network, Friends of Our Heartland, provides opportunities for Singaporeans to deepen their involvement in community-building and make our neighbourhoods a better place to live in. These volunteers serve as changemakers who actively help to facilitate community conversations and bring neighbours together.
Twenty students from West Spring Primary School organised a ‘My Neighbours, My Friends’ carnival that brought Zhenghua residents together through game booths and activity sessions. The students also hosted a ‘Grow-a-Plant’ workshop where they shared their unique potted creations with seniors in the HDB estate. These bonding activites served the aim of spreading warmth and fostering stronger neighbourly ties.
